The Scottscars! Can't wait for the Oscars?!

The Scottscars 2012 I think it’s more fun to have an awards ceremony at the end of the year, just a bit better, more tidy. So grab your tux and get ready to be outraged at not the Oscars, but the Scottscars! Brought to you by the genius minds at scottynewton.blogspot.co.uk The Nicolas Cage award for Best Actor Tom Hardy. Bane was badass, This Means War was something a bit different and shows the man isn’t a one trick pony. Lawless was fantastic. Hope he continues to get the big roles. Will probably get extremely ill and be forced to retire along with Christian Bale soon though due to his constant, drastic weight changes. The Kristen Stewart award for Best Actress. Jennifer Lawrence. Wow, was she incredible in Silver Linings Playbook. So nice to see a leading actor from a teen book adaptation actually being able to act! Take note, Ron Weasely, Emma Watson, Kristen Stewart, R-Patz and Daniel Radcliffe. She’s effortless in Silver Linings and

Happy 90th Birthday Stan Lee!!

What??! Stan Lee is 90 years old? And he's still cameoing in the biggest films around, appearing at every convention possible, still as energetic as ever and still involved in the comics and TV industries. What a guy. I picked up a pencil for the first time in a few months and I have to say, it felt good. Been concentrating on work so much and have had a really difficult year and it almost felt like coming home when I picked up my trusty 2B before work earlier. Here's a set of rough pencils that have yet to be inked and coloured. Hey, one step at a time =) Happy 90th Birthday to Stan, the cameo king! Quick pic of me meeting the man himself earlier this year at the London Super Comic Convention =D Nuff 'said! Come back soon for the upcoming Scottscars..... Yes, that is in fact my version of the Oscars lol *EDIT* Here's the finished digital inks and colours =) Man, it feels good to be back!

Skyfall: Bond on Bond

Skyfal l: Bond on Bond *SPOILERS* This is a great movie, but it’s not a Bond movie. Where do you begin on Skyfall ? Apart from this is not your typical Bond. People were hopeful when Oscar Winner Sam Mendes was brought in to tackle everyone’s favourite super spy. Hopeful that we would get a smarter, deeper and more emotional Bond. And yes, we definitely got a smarter, deeper and emotional movie, but this wasn’t Bond. Is this a good thing? Is this what the ongoing franchise needed? And was there a genuinely good reason this approach was never taken before? Bond: Old dog, new tricks The first chapter sees Bond and new recruit Eve in a typical, over the top chase sequence, which results in Eve smashing up her own car and shooting Bond, with him being assumed dead. This is the only sequence in the entire film that wouldn’t look out of place in the previous 22 movies. Mendes is criticising what the Bond movies have become. That Expendables -esque over the top,

Neytiri- A Return to Digital Comic Artwork

Ok so I have a million and one things to do. On my to do list is a lot of things to do with filming, a dissertation and graphic design. But none of it involves what I love doing most- drawing fantasy characters for the sheer hell of it! Out of fear that I'm losing myself and my inner interests to the world of work I've decided to take a few hours and just draw. For no purpose, competition or payment, but just to end up with an original picture of a fantasy character, like I used to do daily. Only now I think I've improved =) I chose to draw Neytiri from James Cameron's Avatar for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it was a pastel drawing of Neytiri that was the first picture I ever uploaded digitally (it was on deviantart I think), marking the first time I ever felt confident enough to let my artwork be unleashed on the world. Secondly, I had the piano sheet music of Avatar sitting on my desk in front of me lol I used a few techniques that I learned from my

Websites, Newspapers and Movies?

People ask me 'What is your job?' and 'What are you going to do  when you grow up/graduate? Well at the moment I'm a *Part Time Graphic Designer *Part Time Comic Book artist *Part time Filmmaker *Part TIme Web Designer *Part Time Music (piano, guitar and drums) Tutor *Enthusiast Movie Reviewer *All Round Entertainer But the last few months my portfolio's really been coming on a lot (hence my lack of blog activity) and it's time for an update. So being Bond's graphic designer has meant that I've been doing the small things, such as their job adverts and here's the first of things that I've designed for them that I've actually came across in use. (The website and mobile site hasn't been programmed yet and therefore isn't active yet) It's a nice simple job vacancies advert in the Belfast Telegraph. Simple, but hopefully effective! I've just finished working as assistant Graphic

Dave Gibbons- Rorschach Study

Ok this may surprise alot of you going by the pattern of my blog but it is actually comic book artwork that   I do most! Albeit the last few months I've had to work to earn money and the majority of my jobs have been as graphic designer and doing things like laying out things or designing templates or even photmanipulation. But apart from the odd commission, my comic artwork really has taken a back seat. Well no more! I got an hour or 2 free and got this month's Imagine FX magazine which features a nice Dave Gibbon's Pic of Rorschach. It also taught me a few nice new features in MangaStudio and Photoshop which I couldn't resist trying out. Here's the Dave Gibbons Pic which I'm sure you'll agree is pretty sweet. Now here's my version. This isn't perfect because there was no point in me spending alot of time just trying to replicate someone else's artwork. SO instead this is a quick exercise in copying a few techniques and learning a

Charity Concert for Unicef/childline - Robbie Williams

So a week or 2 ago I fulfilled a childhood dream and got to see Robbie Williams live in concert at the 02 Arena, Dublin. And I have to say it was fantastic. What made it great? Not the amazing atmosphere, hilarious banter between Robbie and the crowd or even the 'dad dancing' but the fact that this was a completely stripped back show with no light shows or special effects on screens or anything. And every penny/cent went towards Unicef and Childline, which I thought was a really great gesture from a music star and should hopefully inspire others across the globe to do the same thing. In fact the Dublin gig alone made over €300,000 and considering this was a 3 gig tour, it's likely that the million mark was passed. In just 3 nights. Imagine all of music's stars did this type of thing once a year? The difference it would make would be phenomenal. Anyway here's a quick graphic I did to say thank you and serve as a nice souvenir to all of those involved- The p

Should You Dread Seeing Dredd?

Should You Dread Seeing Dredd ? Dredd 3D Movie Review Want to know what Karl Urban looks like under the mask? Then don't watch Dredd 3D.... NO SPOILERS I though it was spelt 'judgement' too. Turns out this is how you spell it in a legal sense. Nice. Life was always going to be tough for the new Judge Dredd film, being labelled as a comic book film in a year consisting of The Avengers , The Amazing Spider-man , The Dark Knight Rises and erm... Ghost Rider 2 .... But what sparked my interest is that Dredd 3D is not a simple comic book movie clone, with a sympathetic character going on a journey, falling in love, having a secret identity and a crisis point. Instead it's a shameless R rated, blood infested action movie. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. Dredd 3D reminds me of the 2008 film Punisher War Zone , which I found hugely entertaining but critics hated. It's about a badass with a motive, to deal out justice the old fashioned way,

I Totally Recall Brave and Lawless!

Movie Review Round Up! I Totally Recall Brave and Lawless ! First up on our Marvelous Movie Review Triple Bill is....   Total Recall (2012) You will not remember anything.... Yep that sounds about right. NO SPOILERS The good news is that there's no spoilers here at all. 'That's not like you, Scotty', you may be thinking. The simple reason is that I didn't really follow the plot well enough, to know enough about it, to spoil it! Damn, this movie doesn't let up. It's just 2 hours of constant action. Bizarre camera movements that make you feel sick, a consistently overwhelming score and ALOT of leaping! Seriously, every 2 seconds the actors are making some death defying leap in slow motion. Oh and everyone chases everyone a lot, it's like a big futuristic game of tag. Is there actually a plot to this film? Oh, there was? I wouldn't know because after about 45 minutes of action and fast cutting without a break my brain died a bit and I ju
