So after mucking about with a 3D model for last week's Punxsutawney Pete I decided to move onto something a bit more fun.
To challenge myself and see if I could come up with a more faithful depiction of Piccolo from Dragonball in an hour on an ipad, without a reference picture, than Fox could with a $30m-$100m budget (real precise there, Wikipedia).
THE TARGET
THE CONTENDERS
FOX, established movie studio, been around since time began. You've all seen their logo.
ME, future owner of Fox and just about every other major player in the film/entertainment industry. Very few have seen my logo. Own my own set of Dragonballs, that's right
THE RULES
Successfully create a Piccolo with a $30-$100m budget within 2 years with a team of industry experts for Fox. Or do it in an hour on an ipad with virtually no 3D experience and no references for me.
THE ENTRIES
Ok so yeah mine doesn't look as good.... but is it more faithful to the character??
Ok so mine aren't perfect but at least I have SQUISHED THEM FLAT ON HIS FOREHEAD!!!
Honestly this is a company who thinks that Bulma having blue hair or Piccolo the alien, actually looking like an alien, is too unrealistic. Yes. In a film featuring flying cars and a mystical Dragon who can grant wishes.
He's green damnit! Not some kind of crappy faded turnip yellow!
FINE, mine is just a head and therefore not very realistic!
Fox's version has arms, legs and even a middle part. All totally inaccurate of course but more realistic than a floating head that can kill people.
OVERALL
This was just a laugh of course but Fox really did leave out the key points of this character out of fear of him looking 'unrealistic' and 'unrecognisable.' I still maintain that he just looks live an angry man with a skin condition than an alien warrior.
The moral of this story is, don't take the Dragonball license if you're going to do it half hearted. The audience is willing to accept the crazy and the imaginative, that's why we watched the show in the first place.
The other moral is that they should have hired me instead of paying James Marsters $Stupid ;)

Didn't know what a Dragonball was until they heard money was involved |
Typical annoying fanboy who owns his own set of Dragonballs |
