Me vs. 20th Century Fox! Piccolo Battle!

So after mucking about with a 3D model for last week's Punxsutawney Pete I decided to move onto something a bit more fun. To challenge myself and see if I could come up with a more faithful depiction of Piccolo from Dragonball in an hour on an ipad, without a reference picture, than Fox could with a $30m-$100m budget (real precise there, Wikipedia). THE TARGET Just a giant fighting Yoshi THE CONTENDERS FOX, established movie studio, been around since time began. You've all seen their logo. Didn't know what a Dragonball was until they heard money was involved ME, future owner of Fox and just about every other major player in the film/entertainment industry. Very few have seen my logo. Own my own set of Dragonballs, that's right Typical annoying fanboy who owns his own set of Dragonballs THE RULES Successfully create a Piccolo with a $30-$100m budget within 2 years with a team of industry experts for Fox. Or do it in an hour on an ipad with v...

Aliens Summer Smash Round 1

That's right people, this week marked my return to competitive art. As mentioned last week, I'm competing in the Summer Smash movie tournament over at Outcast Studios and my first round match up was due this week. My opponent Dany2069 and I were given the movie 'Aliens' and told to go nuts and just produce any kind of related art. Could be a poster, tonal study, favourite moment, just anything. Time was not on my side this week though with my Web Design job and weeping over my failed haircut taking up alot of time. I did however quickly churn this out. This of course is a teaser poster for a movie that doesn't exist. I tried to make the idea as simple as possible, giving you a clear idea of what the movie would be about etc. If I had time, I would maybe go back and fix the horrible anatomy but hey I'm happy enough for a few hours. Here's what Dan the man through up He's definitely nailed the essence and tone of the Alien franchise m...

Galactus vs. Loki CBR Round 1

*By the way, this fight is a week or two old and my piece was completed on my old tablet and not my new shiny Intuos!* It's time for the third Character Battle Royale Tournament over at Outcast Studios! The tagline is 'evil shall rise' this time and the theme is villains. No more tag teams, this is every man for himself! The idea is for each participant to choose a villain. They are then teamed up with someone else in a one on one fight to the death. Each artist will draw BOTH characters locked in mortal combat. Pretty much this guy but about 300000x bigger My chosen warrior is..... Galactus , the devourer of worlds! (from Fantastic Four) Why? I just thought it would be interseting to see how everyone would approach a one on one fight when one of the participants is bigger than a planet. So yeah in Round One I got paired off with the consistently great Rachael Wells. She chose Loki (from Thor) meaning both of us would have to draw Galactus vs. Loki ...

Battle Artist: Colour Battle- Naruto

So for my second fight in Battle artist I had to colour Ubermorte's (http://ubermorte.deviantart.com/) Naruto lines. Ubermorte's awesome Naruto inks I wanted to have tone, but at the same time wanted to stay faithful to the anime style of Naruto. Went for extremely bright colours and then faded their transparency to make the darker tones stand out. Then I pretty much went mad with the Rasengan in the background! To be honest, backgrounds are my stumbling block. I avoid doing them when I can and this was no exception but at least I got to experiment with the crazy energy waves =) And here's my finished colours All in Photoshop CS5 of course What do we think?

Battle Artist- Ben 10

Yes you did read the title right. Ben 10. My first fight on Battle Artist and I signed up before the subject was announced. And I get Ben 10. I have no idea what Ben 10 is apart from a kids' TV show that thinks it can replace Dragonball. Anyway from what I can see Ben is a shapeshifting alien. Or a kid who can shapeshift into aliens or.... something. Anyway I decided to go for a more realistic approach- taking a photo of myself and going back to Manga Studio and digital inking. Here's my first ink outlines on Manga Studio aaaaand the Photoshop flats and the first tones in PS And the final versions with slightly more 'alien' looking colours Will post when I see what my opposition submits!
