Scotty Newton - All Round Entertainer

     Well it's tradition now. Last day of the year brings my wee film awards for everything I watched over the past 12 months, the Scottscars! As well as a recap of how I got on with my predictions from last year and a set of fresh new ones for next year! Wasn't this a much better year for movies than last year? Transformers was back to being laughably bad instead of sad and depressing, DC didn't bore us into submission and question our love for movies as a whole, and Universal cancelled their Dark Universe! As for my movie stats this year, I ended up watching 104 movies, exactly the same number as last year! 54 of which were at the cinema and 33 of which were rewatches. More interestingly, this was the first year that I watched less on physical media than through streaming, 2 less to be precise! As someone who champions physical media, this was a big surprise, but if the support means that Netflix can make more content like Okja , then let's all go digital! Anyw...

          So it's been quite the year. Quite the year indeed. From celebrity deaths to crazy political shifts to me spending the last 8 weeks recovering from surgery, quality films have been needed more than ever to distract us average joes from the chaos of 2016.            Once again, I didn't get to see as many new movies as I would have liked (104 to be exact, 23 of them being rewatches, but who's counting?) but the year certainly has given us some incredible highs, like when we discovered just what was really going on in Arrvial , and some facepalm inducing lows, like TMNT 2 from start to finish. 2013 Movie Reviews and Awards! There were a few movies released this year and I'm sorry I didn't find the time to post more critiques on them but here's what you need to know, in short. Pacific Rim  is GREAT. It doesn't try to be pretentious at all. It knows that its characters can't do the accents it's trying to. It knows that the dialogue is as ridden with cliches as it is cringeworthy. It realises that Ron Pearlman is a joke in it. But it doesn't pretend to be anything else. It is over the top. It is simple. It is a giant robot attacking a giant alien with a sword. And it is bloody entertaining! The Wolverine  is SMART, for the most part anyway. Movie Review Round Up! I Totally Recall Brave and Lawless ! First up on our Marvelous Movie Review Triple Bill is....   Total Recall (2012) You will not remember anything.... Yep that sounds about right. NO SPOILERS The good news is that there's no spoilers here at all. 'That's not like you, Scotty', you may be thinking. The simple reason is that I didn't really follow the plot well enough, to know enough about it, to spoil it! Damn, this movie doesn't let up. It's just 2 hours of constant action. Bizarre camera movements that make you feel sick, a consistently overwhelming score and ALOT of leaping! Seriously, every 2 seconds the actors are making some death defying leap in slow motion.
